General aim: Enhancing the breeding, production and utilisation of high-protein grain and forage legumes and assessing their contribution to sustainable farming systems

Main achievements of CRA-FLC:

  • Optimisation of species and variety recommendation for pea, white lupin, narrow-leaf lupin and faba bean in relation to the target cropping region and product utilisation
  • Definition of breeding strategies, genetic resources and plant ideotypes, for pea, white lupin, narrow-leaf lupin and faba bean targeted to different Italian environments
  • Assessment of the agronomic potential of grain and forage legumes in intensive farming systems
  • Assessment of the agronomic potential and the optimal variety type for pea under organic farming
  • Development of lucerne germplasm with innovative morphology, to enhance protein yield
  • Evaluation and selection of forage legume species and cultivars for the quantitative and qualitative optimisation of production under different grazing conditions
